A new take on the world of Resident Evil launches in theaters this week. In honor of its release, this week’s binge is a ranking of previous Resident Evil films. Films appear in ascending order.

No. 7: Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)
About: The last of six film made by Paul W.S. Anderson, this is the weakest. This one is actually bad and a real tough watch.

No. 6: Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
About: This was the fourth Resident Evil film and the point where the quality really started to slide. It is hard to feel very set on an order when it comes to this one, the one after it, and the re-boot. It’s a matter of personal preference.

No. 5: Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City (2021)
About: This was about trying to re-boot the franchise after Anderson. It was a Netflix offering and while not the worst, it certainly didn’t make me excited to see more.

No. 4: Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
About: Is this a good movie? No, up to this point on the list, these are all subpar films. This is, arguably, the best of the subpar films. Still, it’s not a great film or a great watch.

No. 3: Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
About: This was the second film in the franchise. This marks a point in time where I would say the films are good moving forward. This one has an interesting performance from Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine. I liked the way this one expanded the world and story.

No. 2: Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)
About: The third film in the franchise, this one moves the action out to a new setting and adds Ali Larter and Oded Fehr. I like the new setting and I liked some of the set pieces. This is definitely a strong No. 2 for me.

No. 1: Resident Evil (2002)
About: Will this remain No. 1 after Zach Cregger’s film? That’s the question. This first film is solid horror and action. It does a good job of bringing this story and world to life and adapting the game. This is actually something of a banger film at times.
