Binge Watch: Dwayne Johnson

The next phase of the D.C. Extended Universe begins tomorrow as Dwayne Johnson suits up as Black Adam. It’s not the first time Johnson has appeared in an action film. Before he does, I am looking at five other Johnson action films that aren’t part of the Fast & Furious franchise for this week’s Binge Watch.

San Andreas (2015)
About:
This is also a pretty fantastic disaster movie as Johnson plays a Los Angeles County fire helicopter pilot when the big one hits and nearly destroys the state. He saves his ex-wife then heads to Northern California to save his daughter. It’s epic for a lot of reasons and one of my favorites in the genre.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
About:
When it was released, this was one of the most surprisingly successful films of the year. A sequel and re-boot all the same time, this one flipped the script and was a lot of fun. Johnson has a great role that allows him to showcase some of his great comedic timing in addition to being a fun action-adventure.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Skyscraper (2018)
About:
Another story of redemption and another disaster film. Here, Johnson is a former FBI agent with a missing leg who is on the worst job interview of all time. When the giant skyscraper where he’s staying with his family catches fire, he has to work overtime to save himself and his family.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Red Notice (2021)
About:
This action-comedy saw Johnson paired with Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. It was a hotly anticipated release from Netflix last year and it was a decent film for what it’s trying to be. Johnson is good in the role and I enjoyed some of the action, back-and-forth banter and the twist in the story.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Jungle Cruise (2021)
About
: Once upon a time one of Johnson’s first screen roles was as a supporting player in The Mummy Returns. This summer film last year not only successfully created a film based on a Disneyland ride, but it also reminded me of what I loved about The Mummy. Johnson is great in the lead and has a great rapport with Emily Blunt. This was a lot of fun.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
