The Netflix original film Blonde, the story of Marilyn Monroe, dropped yesterday. The film has earned a lot of press for its NC-17 rating and also curiosity for the portrayal of Marilyn by Ana de Armas. In honor of the film’s release, this week I’m turning my binge to five other films in de Armas’ filmography.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
About: Ana de Armas plays a key role in this Blade Runner sequel from Denis Villeneuve. I thought the film was visually stunning but I wasn’t taken with the story or the lengthy run time. Still, it was a key breakout role for de Armas, though not her biggest!
Knives Out (2019)
About: In this whodunnit from Rian Johnson, she plays the caregiver at the center of the murder mystery. While her character doesn’t get some of the lavish plot points of others, she’s integral to the story. I thought she was fantastic in a movie that’s quickly become one of my favorites.
Sergio (2020)
About: The Netflix film focuses on UN Diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello, played by Wagner Moura. In the film, de Armas plays Carolina Larriera, who becomes the primary love interest for Sergio. Their chemistry is solid in a film that shines a light on someone whose story isn’t as well known.
No Time to Die (2021)
About: This was the final James Bond film for Daniel Craig and in it de Armas has a fun supporting role as a fellow spy. She’s only present in one sequence but she makes her time on screen count. I adored this film, which was one of my favorites from last year.
Deep Water (2022)
About: There was a lot of excitement about this Adrian Lyne film when it debuted earlier this year. It featured de Armas and her real-life beau at the time, Ben Affleck. It was supposed to be an erotic thriller. It was neither erotic nor thrilling. It’s very possible that this film broke them up.
