The latest film from the world of Insidious, Out of the Further, opens in wide release this week. It will be the sixth installment of the franchise. To celebrate, this week’s binge looks at the previous films in the franchise. Films appear in ascending order.
No. 5: Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
About: This was the fourth installment in the franchise. This has never been my favorite franchise, but the first few have their charm. I found this somewhat charmless, which is why it lands at the bottom.
No. 4: Insidious Chapter 3 (2015)
About: For the third installment, they looked to make a turn in the franchise. It’s the right idea, probably, but the wrong story and execution for me. It didn’t match what came before.
No. 3: Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
About: This returns to the central characters in a big way for the fifth film in the franchise. Patrick Wilson stepped behind the camera here, too. I liked what he tried to do, even if it wasn’t my favorite film.
No. 2: Insidious Chapter 2 (2013)
About: It’s kind of a toss-up when it comes to the top here. I like the talent involved with Wilson, Rose Byrne, and director James Wan. This second installment was a worthy follow up.
No. 1: Insidious (2010)
About: Again, this isn’t my favorite franchise. But this is a solid cast, and the premise works well enough. The original is the best of the franchise, and it’s doubtful it will be topped.
