On Friday a new film, The Death of Robin Hood, will open in theaters. Though we’ve seen Robin Hood portrayed on film in many ways over the years, this looks like a new take. But if you want to catch up on the cinematic lore of Robin Hood, this week’s Binge is for you. Below are five different previous versions of Robin Hood on film. Films appear in chronological order.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
About:
This is not the first, as Douglas Fairbanks led a silent film version in the 1920s. But this is probably the first that people think about, featuring Errol Flynn in the lead role. It’s got its own iconic charm.

Robin Hood (1973)
About:
Look, this is the Disney animated version of the Robin Hood tale, where our lead is actually a fox. I loved this as a kid. It was my gateway to the legend of Robin Hood, and I think it still holds up. It is a lot of fun.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
About
: When it comes to the live-action version of the Robin Hood tale, Kevin Costner will always fill the role for me. He’s great in the lead here, and this has an exceptional cast including Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, and Alan Rickman. It also has a killer soundtrack thanks to Bryan Adams. I’ll accept no Prince of Thieves slander!

Robin Hood (2010)
About
: It feels like every generation someone has to take their swing at the story. This was an epic version of the Robin Hood tale from director Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe in the lead role. It’s a good cast and a solid take on the legend.

Robin Hood (2018)
About
: Yet another take on Robin Hood, and this one feels a little different and a little more like a slick action film. Taron Egerton takes the lead role as Robin, and Jamie Foxx stars as Little John. It’s a fun buddy comedy in its own way.
