This Friday Lee Cronin’s The Mummy lands in theaters. It looks like a hard-bitten horror take on this story. In honor of its release, this week’s binge looks back at past films focused on the Mummy universe. Films appear in chronological order.

The Mummy (1932)
About
: This is part of the original monster verse. This first film built around a mummy features Boris Karloff in the lead role. This is what first kicked off the lore with mummies.

The Mummy (1999)
About
: This was a re-boot and re-imagining of the franchise. This one stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. It’s a fun film directed by Stephen Summers. It’s probably what most people think of when they think of this franchise.

The Mummy Returns (2001)
About
: This film, which turns 25 years old and was re-released in theaters last month, is a successful follow up. I liked the film and remember seeing it in theaters. It’s a fun take on the world.

The Scorpion King (2002)
About:
This was a spin-off of the sequel to The Mummy. This one is built around the Dwayne Johnson character The Scorpion King, who is introduced in that film.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
About:
This was the third in the Fraser franchise. It saw Maria Bello step in for Weisz and the action shift to a new setting and a new villain played by Jet Li. It had potential, but it’s the weakest of the trilogy.

The Mummy (2017)
About
: After the Fraser series wrapped, we got an attempted re-boot as part of a proposed Dark Universe. This one saw Tom Cruise in the lead role. It was a high-profile project that just flopped right out of the box.
