Jon M Chu is razzle-dazzling fans this week with the release of Part One of WICKED. The upcoming musical has star power, led by the dynamic duo of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. But the big question is the movie worth checking out on the big screen? I share my review of the movie and the film award prospects.

Misunderstood because of her green skin, a young woman named Elphaba forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda, a student with an unflinching desire for popularity. Following an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, their relationship soon reaches a crossroad as their lives begin to take very different paths.

Quick Thoughts:

Ultimately, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s chemistry does just enough to prevent this movie from being bad. They are electric on-screen together, and the film suffers for it when they aren’t on your screen. Because of them, I am intrigued to see what is in store for us in Part Two. If you are a fan of the musical, you may love it, but if you haven’t read the book or seen the musical, you might not enjoy it as much. Either way, I recommend seeing it on the big screen because it is a must-see theatrical experiment.
