The new film Monkey Man opens on Friday. It stars Dev Patel, who also serves as the film’s director. In honor of the new release, this week’s Binge takes a look at some other projects featuring Patel. The projects appear in chronological order.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
About:
This was the first time I saw Patel, which is probably true for many. The film won eight Oscars, including Best Picture. Patel is great in the lead role, and this is a film that’s still engaging to watch. If you’re never seen it, it’s worth checking out.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)
About:
This is a fun film that spawned a sequel just a few years later. It’s probably better recognized for its older, adult British actors, like Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, and Bill Nighy, but Patel plays a fun part. This movie has some good comedy and it’s a bit heart-warming. I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

The Newsroom (2012-2014)
About:
This series came from Aaron Sorkin and aired on HBO. Patel was part of a big ensemble led by Jeff Daniels. He does a nice job, and I enjoyed this series more than most people. It may never have been incredible, but I thought it was a fun and engaging watch.

Lion (2016)
About:
This was a different kind of film. It was another one that earned Academy Award attention. It was a Best Picture nominee, but it also earned a nomination for Patel, who plays the adult son of Nicole Kidman on a quest to find his birth parents. It’s an interesting and emotional journey with a great performance from Patel.

The Green Knight (2021)
About
: This was a strange kind of film. It’s something of a Christmas film. It’s also something of a different kind of watch. Patel is the lead in the film and our focal character in this world. I didn’t love it as much as some, but I thought Patel was good in this film, which is certainly different.
