Binge Watch: Evil Dead films

The latest installment in the Evil Dead universe, Evil Dead Rise, opens on Friday. If you can’t get enough of this world, this week’s Binge is for you! This week I’m ranking the four previous films in the Evil Dead Franchise.

4. Evil Dead (2013)
About:
A decade ago, director Fede Alvarez re-booted the franchise. This one saw Jane Levy as the heroine in a film that returned to the cabin and offered a pretty violent and over-the-top take on the world. I thought it was missing some of the humor that made Sam Raimi’s films work. I didn’t enjoy this re-boot, making it my least favorite.

3. The Evil Dead (1981)
About:
My appreciation of this film comes from what Raimi and Bruce Campbell were able to do on a shoe-string budget. I appreciate the originality in the concept and the daring in the way they were able to make the film.

2. Army of Darkness (1992)
About:
This is the third film in Raimi’s franchise, and I know it can be polarizing. Personally, I kind of love it. I love the humor. I love Campbell in this film and I love the way the story plays out. The film is a lot of fun.

1. Evil Dead II (1987)
About:
This is technically a sequel, but really it’s a re-make. Six years after the original, Raimi and Campbell come back with a bigger budget and, essentially, re-do the film. The thing is it works. I like what they did with this film and the bigger budget. I go back-and-forth, but this has become my favorite of the original trilogy.
