“The Exiles” Sundance Review (2022, Violet Columbus, Ben Klein)

-Allison McCulloch

Directors Violet Columbus and Ben Klein met in Christine Choy’s class almost ten years ago when they were students at NYU. After hearing Christine Choy’s stories about how she interviewed those who protested at Tiananmen Square and how they subsequently became exiles, Columbus and Klein made a full-length movie movie about that experience. Choy insists that absolutely no one had any interest in her footage and that she had given up hope on her project. However, the message of the documentary shines through and the events that happened at Tiananmen Square are set in history.

As an exile herself, Christine Choy has been living in America since she was a child. She said the past is gone and she can only live for the future.

Also, please note that the Library of Congress selected her documentary Who Killed Vincent Chin? as part as their National Film Registry in 2021.
