The Breath of Fresh Air The Action Genre Needed: Gunpowder Milkshake – Movie Review

Gunpowder Milkshake: Directed by Navot Papushado

SYNOPSIS: In her turbulent life as a professional assassin, Scarlet was cruelly forced to abandon her daughter Sam and go on the run. Years later, despite the estrangement, Sam has also grown up into a cold blooded hitwoman. After a high-stake mission spins out of control, putting an innocent 8-year-old girl in the middle of the gang war she has unleashed, Sam has no choice but to go rogue. This ultimately leads her back to her mother and her former hitwomen sidekicks, who all join forces in an avenging war against those who took everything from them.

Netflix is on a hot streak this year with some really cool releases and this is another prime example of awesome Netflix action, much like an Extraction. This was by far my most anticipated movie of the weekend. The cast, the premise and just everything involved had me completely invested and ready to check it out.

The goods are in large quantities here. The first is the cast. Karen Gillan and Lena Headey are the stars of this show that bring in a really nice mother/daughter dynamic that I wasn’t expecting. We also have some awesome performances from Carla Gugino, Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett add a really awesome dynamic to the film that I didn’t know I needed.

The action is absolutely fantastic. This is literally John Wick with badass female leads and in all of the best ways. The action really kicks major ass and that is the selling point for the film. It accomplished what most action films dream of doing and became a breath of fresh air in the action genre. On top of the action, the writing is very well done as well. The story is clear and concise without being too dull. The world building and mythology of this world is clearly stated and we learn a lot really fast without being too overwhelmed. Extremely solid writing for a film that had the potential of being a simple story.

Again, this is a film with so many layers. The emotion hits, the stakes are actually high and all of that coupled with the incredible action and stellar performances make this a really damn good time and a film that I’m absolutely going to want to watch again. This is Netflix’s Extraction for 2021. A really awesome action film that is going to be in conversation all year long.

The negatives are far and few in between. There are some pacing issues at parts but at this point, that is really grasping for straws due to all of the good involved with this film.

FINAL: Gunpowder Milkshake is a stellar action film that has injected a breath of fresh air into the action genre. The potential was there and it was hit out of the park. The action is awesome, rivaling the likes of John Wick. The performances are welcome and impressive. The writing is really solid and full of really interesting mythology and world building. The entirety of this film was a recipe for success and it performed with flying colors. This is the 2021 version of Extraction for Netflix in all of the best ways and you should watch it as soon as possible.
