This week we get Pressure, the new World War II film that features Brendan Fraser as Dwight D. Eisenhower. Before Fraser started appearing as older or iconic figures in films, he made his name with some classic comedies and action films from the 1990s. In honor of the release of Pressure, this week’s binge looks at past Fraser films. Films appear in chronological order.
Encino Man (1992)
About: Probably one of the first films that put Fraser on the map, he stars as a cave man found frozen and dethawed by a couple of friends (Sean Astin and Pauly Shore). It’s a decent comedy for the time and a decent performance from Fraser.
The Scout (1994)
About: Here Fraser plays a talented but troubled prospect opposite Albert Brooks in this baseball comedy. Fraser is solid as Steve Nebraska in a film that’s another comedy of its era. It continued a string of similar style films for Fraser.
George of the Jungle (1997)
About: Here, Fraser played the titular star. This is another broad comedy and Fraser is fine, but this isn’t my favorite of these types of films. And, fortunately, it wasn’t long before he went another direction.
Blast From the Past (1999)
About: Another comedy, but this one a unique story and approach. He’s great opposite Alicia Silverstone here in a comedy about a man who emerges after his parents mistake an incident for a nuclear attack and retreat to a fallout shelter. Christopher Walker and Sissy Spacek are great here, too.
The Mummy (1999)
About: And with this, Brendan Fraser action star was born. I saw this movie in theaters when it came out and I was hooked. He is delightful as Rick O’Connell in this film and its two sequels. I can’t wait for the upcoming re-boot!
