This Friday we get the latest from the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian and Grogu. It comes from director Jon Favreau and continues the events of the television series. In honor of its release, this week’s binge looks at previous films directed by Favreau. Films appear in chronological order.

Elf (2003)
About
: This is a near-perfect Christmas film and a delightful comedy featuring Will Ferrell. For so many, this has been a yearly watch for the past 20 years. Favreau appears in the film, too.

Iron Man (2008)
About
: This is the film that introduced Robert Downey, Jr., as Iron Man and started the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though early, this remains one of the better MCU films, a credit to Favreau.

Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
About
: This was a big-budget, high-concept action adventure. On paper it should have been a home run given the cast and the concept. But, for me, it is under-whelming. I still appreciate Favreau as a director, but this wasn’t great.

Chef (2014)
About
: After a few years of high-profile, big-budget projects, Favreau goes to a smaller story with Chef. He’s the star of the film too, with a cast that includes Downey and Scarlett Johansson. It’s a fun departure from some of his bigger budget stuff.

The Lion King (2019)
About
: This was the “live action” re-make of the animated classic. It was commercially a success, making plenty at the Box Office. But it wasn’t much of a critical success, nor does it live up to the hype. Still, an interesting choice given his new movie.
