Sony has held the rights to Spider-Man for a while, and during that time we’ve seen a few different Spider-Man franchises, including the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe version. But Sony hasn’t just made Spider-Man films. They’ve also created some Spider-Man adjacent films with varying results. As Venom: The Last Dance opens Friday this week’s binge looks at four previous non-Spider-Man films. Films appear in ascending order.

No. 4: Morbius (2022)
About
: There are misfires, then there’s whatever this film is. Jared Leto feels miscast but then again, the whole film feels a little miscast. The marketing campaign wasn’t great, either. This was a true slog and bottom of the barrel for me.

No. 3: Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
About
: This follow up to the Tom Hardy franchise upped the action. I thought it had a decent flow. I haven’t loved the Venom films, but they are OK, and I’m oddly interested in the third film. This sequel was about what I expected.

No. 2: Venom (2018)
About
: If I have to pick between the Venom films, this one gets the nod. I like the storyline with Michelle Williams better here, and I like the origin aspects. As noted, Venom isn’t my favorite of the superhero films, but Hardy is good in the role.

No. 1: Madame Web (2024)
About
: This will likely come as a surprise. I’m going to say the hate on this film has gone too far. It’s not incredible, but I did like Dakota Johnson here and I liked the potential of the premise. This film isn’t great, but I kind of had fun with it. So, it sits at the top of this list for me.
