This week we get a couple new movies, among them is a new action drama starring Dave Bautista as a contract killer. While he’s probably best known for his work in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune franchises, we’ve seen Bautista do a lot of different roles. Below, for this week’s binge, I’m looking at five of his non-franchise parts. Films appear in chronological order.

Stuber (2019)
About:
Here, he plays a hard-boiled detective who is paired with an uber-driver played by Kumail Nanjiani. It’s a fun action-comedy set up, and I liked these two playing off each other. This is kind of an under-rated film.

My Spy (2020)
About:
This one came out during COVID, so you might not remember it. The film actually spawned a sequel, too, that was released this Spring. It features Bautista as a CIA agent going under-cover who bonds with a precocious young girl that figures out his secret. It’s an interesting set up and I liked Bautista even if I didn’t always enjoy the film.

Army of the Dead (2021)
About:
This film from Zack Snyder was a big action piece for Netflix. It’s a heist film set in the middle of a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas. Bautista is one of the primary protagonists. The film had a lot of potential—and a lot of action—but it ended up being just OK.

The Glass Onion (2022)
About
: Bautista is part of a loaded cast here for Rian Johnson in his follow up to Knives Out. I love Daniel Craig as the detective here, but Bautista is a lot of fun in his supporting part, which ends up being key to the mystery. This was a different kind of film for Bautista, but he fits well in this ensemble.

Knock at the Cabin (2023)
About
: Here, Bautista takes a key role in this horror film from M. Night Shymalan. This was a weird film, and it didn’t totally work, but I liked Bautista in the role as sort of the leader of a group of people that believe the world is coming to an end. It’s a different kind of part and film, but he handles the action well.
