This year I’m sharing some of my favorite animated films of all time. Each Saturday I’ll be dropping another entry as I count down my favorites in the animated genre. Periodically throughout the year I’ll be sharing them in this Binge Watch space. Today, I offer my picks for No. 40 to No. 31, with entries appearing in ascending order. If you want to keep up weekly, follow along Saturdays on my blog.
No. 30: Suzame (2022)
About: The last couple of years have been strong for animation. I have not always been a fan of this style of animation, but the story, characters, and the look of Suzame really captured me when saw it.
No. 29: The Simpsons Movie (2007)
About: This film came 18 years into the run of the TV Series, and it’s been nearly that long for the series running since the film. It’s an amazing run, and this is an interesting piece of Simpsons history. I like the story here and the sense of humor. This is a fun animated film.
No. 28: Elemental (2023)
About: This was the Pixar entry last year and I loved it. I was surprised it wasn’t more well received, but the story and the characters worked for me. I loved the music, and I loved the way the animation was done. This was an engaging and fun film.
No. 27: Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
About: This film got lost in the shuffle somewhat due to the pandemic. It was released on to streaming and I don’t know if it got the kind of wide audience it deserved. Still, I loved the look and the story. This is a really fun film.
No. 26: Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
About: The characters here are fun. I like John C. Reilly in the lead, and Sarah Silverman is fun here, too. I remember being taken with the colorful look and the colorful characters. It was a heck of a fun ride.
No. 25: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
About: I have never been a big fan of Shrek or its extended universe, so I didn’t have high expectations for this film. In fact, I didn’t much care for the first Puss in Boots stand-alone film. And yet, this sequel really got me. I liked the story and the humor worked well here. This was one of my favorite animated films the year it was released.
No. 24: DC League of Super-Pets (2022)
About: Another 2022 release back-to-back, and another film that was a surprise for me. In fact, I saw the trailer and didn’t think much of this. But it became one of my favorite films the year it was released. The story and characters are great, and it’s a sneaky-fun superhero film as well.
No. 23: Beauty and the Beast (1991)
About: This is my wife’s favorite film of all-time and I have always really enjoyed it. I like the music and the characters. This is also an important film in the genre, becoming the first Animated film to be nominated for Best Picture. It holds up well and remains a classic.
No. 22: Superman: Doomsday (2007)
About: I love the story that deals with the death of Superman. It’s always so moving and has been told in a variety of ways in a variety of platforms. I remember seeing the release for this film, which I purchased sight-unseen on DVD, something I rarely do. I wasn’t disappointed. I like the way this classic Superman story is told here.
No. 21: Big Hero 6 (2014)
About: Another superhero film of sorts on animated format. This one has a wonderful look and a wonderful story. You can’t help but love Baymax, voiced by Scott Adsit. There’s a charm to this story and a warmth that I really enjoy.
