SXSW 2023 Review: “Hung Up on a Dream”

“We like music.”

Robert Schwartzman’s documentary on British band The Zombies (“She’s Not There”, “Time of the Season”) is worth checking out whether you’ve been a fan for decades or if you’re just discovering them.

In the beginning, I felt that there was too much of an emphasis on fans’ reactions. It would have been better to put those near the end after we had more of a sense of who the band was. Otherwise, there were great interviews from and archival footage of the band members, who tell their own story.

Like too many bands, they were initially taken advantage of by contracts that didn’t have their best interest at heart. Emerging victorious after reinventing themselves, they were eventually inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
