TNF Preview, Week 2

The second week of the NFL Season kicks off tonight in Kansas City. It’s also the beginning of a new era as Thursday Night Football shifts to Amazon Prime. And Amazon—complete with Al Michaels behind the mic—gets a great matchup to begin its run.

The Chiefs opened the season in Arizona and it’s possible they’re still scoring… Patrick Mahomes didn’t seem suffer in his first game without Tyreek Hill, tossing five touchdowns as the Chiefs scored 44 points. Justin Herbert tossed three touchdown passes of his own as his team held on to beat the Las Vegas Raiders, 24-19. So, both teams come in 1-0 and looking for more in the competitive AFC West.

This game pits two of the top offenses and quarterbacks, as noted above. But the big question is if the Chargers’ improvements on defense will be enough. They added Khalil Mack to the pass rush, while adding to the secondary. But corner J.C. Jackson is questionable, which could present a challenge in slowing down the Chiefs’ passing game. Another challenge is the injury to Keenan Allen, which could leave the Chargers’ passing game short-handed.

On the Kansas City side, the big win for the offense was spreading the ball around. The Chiefs still have star tight end Travis Kelce, but in Week 1 Mahomes threw two touchdowns to Clyde Edwards-Helaire and used two running backs, three tight ends and four receivers on Sunday, including new additions Juju Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

It’s a short week and the Chargers could be without two stars, so what to expect tonight? Herbert has shown he can work with what’s available so missing Allen is a blow to fantasy players more than the Chargers. The team still has Austin Ekeler in the backfield and Mike Williams at receiver, both of whom are starts. I’m also bullish on tight end Gerald Everett, who scored in Week 1.

For the Chiefs, Mahomes is certainly a start, as is Kelce, who’s the top option at the position. I like Smith-Schuster as a WR3 based on volume, while MVS is a boom-or-bust flex option. Finally, I’m coming around on CEH, who was involved in all phases of the offense in Week 1. He’d likely have had a bigger day if the game hadn’t gotten out of hand. I like him as a flex option with some Top-24 upside.

I’m picking the Chiefs to win at home.
