Royally screwed follows a girl called Olivia (Jenny Boyd) who works and runs her family’s cafe making pies. When she meets a rude and show offy prince called Nicholas (Max Rinehart) together they help each other grow and start to fall in love but will the royal family approve?

Royally Screwed was a really nice little romantic film, with great costumes and beautiful filming locations that added so much to the overall feel. I really enjoyed the story, and even though I managed to guess the eventual outcome fairly early on, the journey to get there had a few unexpected twists and turns that kept things interesting and engaging.

It did take me a while to warm up to Nicholas, but I honestly think that was the point. His character grows on you as the film goes on, and by the end, I appreciated him much more than I did at the start.  There were also a few funny moments throughout the film that made me chuckle, providing a nice balance to the more heartfelt scenes. I liked some of Nicholas and Olivia’s outfits and shoes, but Nicholas often wore suits.

The romance itself was sweet and touching, with plenty of cute and tender moments that made it easy to root for the central characters. I was slightly surprised by the inclusion of swearing and some more mature elements, as it felt a bit unexpected given the overall theme and tone of the film. However, I still enjoyed it and it didn’t take away from the overall story.

Boyd and Rinehart are both extremely talented actors and they have a beautiful on-screen chemistry, I really enjoyed watching their relationship unfold. Their interactions felt natural and engaging, especially since both characters are feisty. They both work so well together and the way they bounced off one another created an entertaining and believable relationship that carried the emotional heart of the film. There are also several quite mature, steamy scenes throughout, which I think helped make the relationship feel stronger and more intense.

Royally Screwed may feel a bit slow in places, but overall it’s an enjoyable romantic film. It stands out with its unique premise, heartfelt moments, and a few chuckles.

Royally Screwed is now streaming on Passion Flix.
