This week we get the new film from Sam Raimi, Send Help, which finds Rachel McAdams on a remote island after a plane crash. We’ve seen people trapped on an island before, so this week’s binge watch looks at a few other films with this set up. Films appear in chronological order!
The Blue Lagoon (1980)
About: This film is a classic, but maybe not as much for the story as for the story of young lovers played by Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins. It’s also a story of survival after the two, who happen to be cousins, are stranded on an island after their ship goes down.
Lord of the Flies (1990)
About: This tale about a group of young boys stranded on an island is a cautionary tale. I remember seeing it when I was younger, and the way it was seared into my memory. It’s also based on the classic novel.
Cast Away (2000)
About: Who doesn’t remember this tale of Tom Hanks and a volleyball named Wilson? It does a lot with the concept and had a very strong visual look. It’s a great performance from Hanks, too.
Triangle of Sadness (2022)
About: This is a different kind of tale. It’s a black comedy that starts out about a young couple. Then we transition to a group of people on a yacht cruise that goes really wrong. Finally, they end up crashing and stranded on an island. It was unique and a critical darling when it came out.
Eden (2024)
About: This film from Ron Howard, which came out last year, isn’t about people stranded on an island by accident. No, they choose to be stranded there, away from society, to build a new life. But, still, things go horribly wrong. Sydney Sweeney is really good in this one.
