This week we get the new film Mercy, which imagines what justice might look like in the future. It’s not the first film to tackle the subject. For this week’s binge, I’m looking at other depictions of justice in the future. Films appear in chronological order.

A Clockwork Orange (1971)
About:
This film from Stanley Kubrick is a classic. It was also very controversial at the time for its subject matter and its approach. It features a good lead performance from Malcolm McDowell, but it’s far from an easy watch.

Blade Runner (1982)
About:
We’ve seen many versions of this Ridley Scott tale based on a Philip K. Dick story over the years. Harrison Ford is great in the lead role and it’s an interesting look at what the future and future justice might look like.

Robocop (1987)
About:
This classic sees Peter Weller as a cop who is injured and re-built as a robotic emissary of justice. This one is probably remembered more as an action film than a think piece about the future of justice. Still, it’s something of a classic.

Judge Dredd (1995)
About:
There are a couple versions of this story. I’m highlighting the original, which features Sylvester Stallone in the lead role. It’s an interesting idea about how a man might be judge, jury, and executioner in the future. But, again, this is probably more notable as an action film.

Minority Report (2002)
About
: This classic from Steven Spielberg is the film I first thought of when seeing the trailer for Mercy. Tom Cruise is great in the lead role, and this is an interesting concept, again based on the story from Dick.
