This week, as we launch into 2026, we get Greenland 2: Migration. It’s a sequel to another disaster film, which is a fun genre all its own. In honor of its release, here’s a few other disaster films to check out if you just can’t get enough! Films appear in chronological order.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
About
: Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid have to survive a new ice age in this film from the team behind Independence Day. This time it’s a natural disaster, but the result is a bulk of the planet changed or wiped out. I remember seeing it in theaters when it debuted. It’s fairly epic.

2012 (2009)
About:
The Mayans predicted the world would end in 2012, so Roland Emmerich saw his shot to make a disaster film. This one, too, is fairly epic. We watch most of it through the eyes of John Cusack, a man determined to try and save his family from the end of the world. Again, epic in scope.

San Andreas (2015)
About:
If you grew up in California, you knew what it was to fear the big one when it comes to earthquakes. This film brings the big one to life in a fun way with Dwyane Johnson and Carla Gugino at the heart of the human story. It was a lot of fun, particularly on the big screen.

Geostorm (2017)
About:
Gerard Butler is a repeat offender in this genre. In 2017, he was a scientist who helped create a set of satellites to control the Earth’s climate. When those satellite’s go rogue, he has to try and fight to save the world from his own creation. Mayhem then ensues!

Greenland (2020)
About
: Butler is the lead here, as a family man who tries to get his family to safety after a meteor attack destroys most of the Earth and humanity. This felt like the perfect film to be watching during a pandemic in 2020. Will it work as a sequel? I guess we’ll find out!
