As 2025 draws to a close, it’s time to take stock of what we’ve seen on the big and small screen. Over the next few days, I’ll be giving some of my picks in a wide variety of categories. Up today, it’s the five worst movies I saw in 2025.
No. 5: I Know What You Did Last Summer
About: It’s been all the rage to make and re-make films of late. While the re-boot of Scream a few years ago was mildly successful, this re-boot of another 1990s horror franchise flatlined for me. The story was terrible and the new characters—and performances—made me wish I was the one taking a fisherman’s hook to the eye. This is skippable to say the least.
No. 4: In the Lost Lands
About: Paul W.S. Anderson adapts an ambitious George R.R. Martin novel here. He has a cast that includes Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista. On paper, it should be a winner. In practice, it’s nothing short of a confusing mess. It’s a waste of time that is hard to follow and boring at the same time. I didn’t mind his take on the Resident Evil world, but this is a major miss.
No. 3: Into the Deep
About: I love a good shark movie. But a bad shark movie, of which there are many, can be a real bummer. This one features Scout Taylor Compton as a girl who had a bad experience as a young woman that finds herself at sea, facing human threats and sharks. It’s a decent set up with terrible execution. The presence of Richard Dreyfuss merely makes me think about other, better shark films. This was a miss.
No. 2: Control Freak
About: Hulu, like other streamers, has been adding original films. Many of them are original horror films. Some are OK, others are terrible. This falls into the latter category. I like Kelly Marie Tran, who was the lead here, but she deserves better. This was a total slog.
No. 1: I Heart Willie
About: Since some of our popular cartoon characters fell into the public domain, they’ve become fodder for low-budget slasher films. Mickey Mouse—in his original Steamboat Willie design—has become fodder for many of these. I Heart Willie was the craziest, most violent, and most unsettling of these attempts. This film is vile and over-the-top. It was easily the worst thing I saw this year.
