James L.Brooks is a long-time contributor to entertainment. He’s been a prolific writer and producer, but he’s only directed a handful of films. One of those, Ella McCay, drops in theaters tomorrow. In honor of that release, this week’s binge looks at other films directed by Brooks. Films appear in chronological order.
Terms of Endearment (1983)
About: For a first directorial effort, this is an incredible swing. It’s an iconic and bittersweet film. It features some good performances from Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, and Jack Nicholson. It’s a classic.
Broadcast News (1987)
About: This is another classic and classically funny and engaging story, set behind-the-scenes at a TV news operation. It’s got a good cast, led by William Hurt, Albert Brooks, and Holly Hunter. This is a lot of fun.
As Good As It Gets (1997)
About: After a decade away, Brooks returned to directing with this classic starring Nicholson and Helen Hunt. It was a Best Picture nominee and is a good ride, with a fun blend of humor and drama. It’s a good performance from Nicholson, too. Nicholson’s Oscar win was his second for work in a film from Brooks.
Spanglish (2004)
About: This is an interesting dramedy that puts Adam Sandler at the center. At the time, Sandler hadn’t done many more serious films, and the audience wasn’t ready for it. But I think it’s a solid performance in an interesting film.
How Do You Know (2010)
About: This is the last feature Brooks directed, now 15 years ago. It features Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, and Owen Wilson. It has its charming moments, and even has a small part from Brooks all-star Nicholson.
