
This week we get the new Netflix film Jay Kelly. It’s the latest from director Noah Baumbach. In honor of its release, this week’s binge looks at five other films directed by Baumbach. The list appears in chronological order.
Kicking and Screaming (1995)
About: This was Baubach’s directorial debut, dropping 30 years ago. It has a solid cast, including Josh Hamilton and Parker Posey, and delivered a certain kind of story that began creating his fans.
The Squid and the Whale (2005)
About: This one earned Baubach an Academy Award nomination for best screenplay. This is about a family going through divorce, and has a cast including Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, and Jesse Eisenberg. It’s a solid drama.
Frances Ha (2012)
About: This is a New York-set film shot in black-and-white. It launched him headlong into his partnership with Greta Gerwig on and off screen. This is a film that has a lot of fans.
Marriage Story (2019)
About: For the past few years, Baubach has been directing for Netflix. This one is an incredible ride. He returns to look at a crumbling marriage, but the powerful performances from Adam Drive and Scarlet Johansson make this really powerful.
White Noise (2022)
About: This one was his most recent for Netflix, an interesting journey based on the book from Don DeLillo. It has a good cast and some good moments from Adam Driver and Don Cheadle.
