Just in time for Thanksgiving we get Zootopia 2, the latest in a long line of animated sequels. This week’s binge takes a look at some recent animated sequels that soar. Films appear in chronological order.

Frozen II (2019)
About:
Frozen was a big hit for Disney, so it makes sense that we’d return to the world. This wasn’t as dynamic as the original film, but it does have some good moments. It also has some good songs.

Sing 2 (2021)
About:
Sometimes we get a sequel that surpasses the original. I liked Sing fine. But when it came to Sing 2, I was mesmerized. I thought the songs worked and the story was a great, emotional time at the theater.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
About:
Another sequel to a film that wasn’t my favorites. The first Puss in Boots, a spin-off of Shrek, was just OK. But I really enjoyed this follow up. I liked the story and the voice acting. It was one of my favorites the year it was released.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
About:
The first Spider-Verse film was unlike anything I’d seen. It’s my favorite animated film ever. The second one was still a lot of fun. It ends on a cliffhanger that, hopefully, we’ll get to see some resolution for at some point in the future.

Inside Out 2 (2024)
About:
It’s fitting that we end here, because this is another sequel, I thought surpassed the original. I liked Inside Out, I was deeply moved by this sequel. It was one of my favorite films of last year.
