The Treehouse of Horror is an annual rite-of-passage for horror fans and fans of The Simpsons. It has been a staple since the show’s second season in 1990. Below is a look back at the first 10 years of specials, appearing in a ranked order. All episodes are streaming on Disney+.

No. 10: Treehouse of Horror VIII (October 26, 1997)
About
: There are not bad episodes, per se. But this was my least favorite of the first 10. The fallout shelter bit was amusing, and I enjoyed the final sketch about the witch trials leading to Halloween. The Bart fly one in the middle is kind of boring.

No. 9: Treehouse of Horror IV (October 28, 1993)
About:
This one has some creative bits, the best being the Dracula option at the end. I like it OK, but it doesn’t reach the heights of some of the others.

No. 8: Treehouse of Horror X (October 31, 1999)
About
: The middle part, where Bart and Lisa get superpowers and fight with Xena, isn’t really a horror piece. It’s fun though. I liked the riff on I Know What You Did Last Summer with Ned that opens things, and the Y2K meltdown that closes it.

No. 7: Treehouse of Horror VI (October 29, 1995)
About
: This has some clever bits, turning Willie into the villain from A Nightmare on Elm Street-style story. But the opening about statues coming to life and the closing which felt like a take on Tron don’t quite hit as hard.

No. 6: Treehouse of Horror III (October 29, 1992)
About
: The third edition of Treehouse of Horror has some fun moments. I like the King Kong spoof in the middle, and the zombie story at the end and the killer Krusty doll to start the episode are fun.

No. 5: Treehouse of Horror IX (October 25, 1998)
About
: This one really lands here because of the opening sequence, which is a lot of fun. I liked the killer hair idea. When Bart and Lisa land in an episode of Itchy and Scratchy, that’s a lot of fun, too. Alien Maggie isn’t as great to close it, but I still enjoyed this on.

No. 4: Treehouse of Horror II (October 31, 1991)
About
: This was the second ever special, and it’s pretty fun. We start with the story of a Monkey Paw, then move into a Twilight Zone riff and end with Frankenstein. It’s creative.

No. 3: Treehouse of Horror VII (October 27, 1996)
About:
This one ends with a bit of a funny shot at the 1996 Presidential election. That’s the weakest of its offerings. I enjoyed the evil twin riff to start things. But I had a lot of fun with the society built out of Lisa’s tooth in the middle. Not scary, but this was entertaining.

No. 2: Treehouse of Horror V (October 30, 1994)
About
: This one begins with a take on The Shinning and ends with a riff on Soylent Green. That’s some fun creativity. The middle leg is a funny riff on time travel with Homer, too. This is a fun episode.

No. 1: Treehouse of Horror (October 25, 1990)
About:
To top the list, we go back to the beginning. We start with a haunted house built on an alien burial ground. We transition to a funny alien short that draws from a classic Twilight Zone episode. And we end with a spoof of The Raven, which might be one of the all-time classics.
