The fourth and final film in The Conjuring film franchise drops this week. It’s been a successful franchise spanning 12 years. This will be the ninth entry in the expanded universe. In honor of its release, this week’s binge looks at that extended universe. Films appear in ascending order.

No. 8: Annabelle: Comes Home (2019)
About
: How much ground can you squeeze out of a creepy doll? This was the third individual film for Annabelle, who was first introduced in The Conjuring. Look, some people love these. I was bored by this point.

No. 7: The Nun II (2023)
About
: A fine follow up to the first one, which is really some kind of prequel spin-off. Taissa Farmiga is solid in the lead role of this spin-off. The movie’s not as good as the first, but it works well enough.

No. 6: Annabelle: Creation (2017)
About
: As noted, Annabelle isn’t my favorite horror movie villain. This sequel is fine, with some stylish elements. Some like it better, but I maintain the series has been diminishing returns for me.

No. 5: Annabelle (2014)
About
: This was the first of the stand-alone Annabelle films, coming closely after The Conjuring. It adds to the lore and expands things. It’s fine, but not totally my cup of tea.

No. 4: The Nun (2018)
About
: This is the second of The Conjuring spin-off films. This, drawing from the second film. I mentioned I like Taissa in the lead role, and I liked the creepy factor of the film.

No. 3: The Conjuring 2 (2016)
About
: I am in the category where I like all three Conjuring films, but I wouldn’t say I love any of them. This follow up is solid, touching on the case that inspired The Amityville Horror. I think it’s a well-made film.

No. 2: The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
About
: This was the third of the films and got kind of a funny release. It also moves on from Director James Wan. Still, I enjoyed it for what it was. The second and third Conjuring films are about even for me.

No. 1: The Conjuring (2013)
About:
I didn’t know what to expect when I went into The Conjuring. What I got was something engaging and something stirring. I still think it’s the high-water mark of the franchise and a solid horror film. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson make for a great team.
