We’re heading into Labor Day Weekend with the latest from director Darren Aronofsky, Caught Stealing. In honor of its release, this week’s binge takes a look at other big films from the director over the past 25 years. Films appear in chronological order.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
About: This is a searing look at the impact of drug use. It’s a memorable film that is usually the first that comes to mind when thinking of Aronofsky. It earned an Academy Award nomination for Ellen Burstyn. It’s a tough watch, but a fantastic film.
The Wrestler (2008)
About: This was a moving portrait of a broken-down old wrestler played by Mickey Rourke. It’s one of Rourke’s best performances, earning him and Marissa Tomei Academy Award nominations. It’s a deeply moving drama.
Black Swan (2010)
About: This is something of a psychological thriller set in the world of ballet. It has a fantastic leading performance from Natalie Portman, who won an Academy Award for her work. The film also earned Aronofsky a directing nomination and earned a Best Picture nomination.
Mother! (2017)
About: A surrealist horror film about parenthood starring Jennifer Lawrence. This was a weird and often tough watch, one that even the cast has sometimes said they didn’t understand. It’s definitely got its fans but wasn’t a big critical or commercial success for Aronofsky.
The Whale (2023)
About: Another film noted for its performances, in this case Brendan Fraser winning Best Actor. It’s a tough film to watch at times, about a man struggling with a number of issues while trying to be a father. It’s got a good cast and probably didn’t deserve some of the hate it got.
