The new film Americana is in theaters. It has a loaded cast featuring, among others, Sydney Sweeney. Sweeney has been popular in recent years, so this week’s binge takes a look at other films she’s appeared in. Films appear in chronological order.
The Voyeurs (2021)
About: This thriller on Prime Video was a racier take on the Rear Window concept. Sweeney and her boyfriend (Justice Smith) start peering in on the man living across from them and his varied encounters. It draws them into a dangerous and illicit world before taking something of a twist. Sweeney has been known for her racy roles on TV, and this feels like an extension of that.
Reality (2023)
About: This was one of two projects about Reality Winner, the former soldier arrested for treason for leaking classified documents. Here, Sweeney plays Winner in a film that’s shot in real time focusing on the FBI interrogation in her house. It’s a good performance in an uneven film.
Anyone But You (2023)
About: This is a romantic comedy about opposites who attract. It was released near Christmas and features a smoldering connection between Sweeney and Glen Powell. This is a lot of fun for this type of film.
Madame Web (2024)
About: Sweeney enters the Marvel universe, at least the Sony non-Spider-Man version of it. This was Dakota Johnson’s movie, but she’s part of the ensemble. She’s fine here, and this movie isn’t as bad as some have claimed, but it’s not that memorable, either.
Immaculate (2024)
About: This was one of a wave of horror films that featured a nun tricked into carrying a demonic spawn in Europe. That feels like a specific niche, and this was the A24 version that didn’t gain as much traction as the Omen sequel. Still, Sweeney is good here.
