This week Freakier Friday swings into theaters. It’s a sequel to one of the classic versions of Freaky Friday. In honor of the release, this week’s binge looks at body switch comedies through the years. Films appear in chronological order.
Freaky Friday (1976)
About: This is the original version of the film, featuring a young Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris as a mother and daughter who switch bodies. There is a magical element to this switch that doesn’t totally make sense. But there’s some fun sequences and hijinks here. It’s good for those that want to see the origins.
Big (1988)
About: This is about a kid who wishes to be big at a carnival machine and, somehow, turns out to be Tom Hanks. This has a good cast and it’s a lot of fun to watch. It’s a bit of a different take on the formula, but it’s a classic for a reason.
Freaky Friday (2003)
About: This is the film that inspired our sequel, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan taking on the mother-daughter switch roles. This has a good supporting turn from Mark Harmon and is a lot more fun than the original. There have been a few swings at this material, but this is the best and should make us hopeful for the new outing.
Freaky (2020)
About: The horror/comedy take, where a teen girl (Kathryn Newton) switches bodies with a serial killer (Vince Vaughn). It provides hilarity and a mission. This was a pretty ingenious take on the formula and a lot of fun, especially for horror fans.
