Liam Neeson takes the lead in the reboot of The Naked Gun, out this week. He’s been a fixture on the big screen since the 1990s, best known for his work in action films and serious dramas. But he’s been in comedies before. This week’s binge takes a look at some of his work in less serious films. Films appear in chronological order.
Love Actually (2003)
About: This Christmas comedy is a seasonal classic and has been for more than 20 years. Neeson is part of the ensemble in one of the more emotional and serious plots. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have any fun. He’s got a few really fun sequences with his son as a man getting over losing his wife.
The A Team (2010)
About: This is something of an action comedy. It’s the big screen adaptation of a classic series from the 1980s. Neeson plays the leader Hannibal and seems to be having a lot of fun in the role.
A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014)
About: This comedy from Seth MacFarlane was an unexpected delight. It’s a Western, and Neeson plays the chief bad guy, but it’s a farcical and fun film all the way around. This sparked a few different times working with MacFarlane in smaller roles from cameos on The Orville and Family Guy, to a bit part in Ted 2.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
About: Here we get another Western. This is also something of a comedy, though it has a very different tone. It comes from the Coen Brothers for Netflix, featuring a collection of short stories. Neeson appears in the “Meal Ticket” segment.
Men in Black: International (2019)
About: Another action comedy, this one a franchise re-boot with Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in the lead roles. Neeson plays agent High T, and he certainly seems to be having fun with it. It’s not a great film, but it’s fun for what it is.
