With Fantastic Four First Steps finally here, the big year for Pedro Pascal continues. Since taking the lead in the Mandalorian in 2019, his profile has exploded. He’s already been in three theatrical releases this year, with more big projects on the way. This week’s Binge looks at five of his most interesting projects since 2020. Films appear in chronological order.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
About: This was Pascal’s first big superhero film, as he launched into the DCEU as a villain in the second Wonder Woman film. Between Covid and missteps, this turned out to be a disaster. It was released in theaters and streaming, but it wasn’t well received by audiences.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
About: This film is most remembered for Nicholas Cage playing a hilarious version of Nicholas Cage. And while that’s true, Pascal plays the co-lead here. He plays off Cage well, bringing his own crazy energy. I actually really liked this film.
Strange Way of Life (2023)
About: This is a short from director Pedro Almodovar. It stars Pascal and Ethan Hawke in an interesting and unexpected Western. It has great mood and an intriguing story, but it’s really about the performances of these two stars.
Drive Away Dolls (2024)
About: Pascal has a supporting role in this film from Ethan Coen and his wife, Tricia Cooke. This wasn’t a film that totally worked for me, but it does have a wild story. And, naturally, Pascal has one of the wildest roles in that story. It’s worth checking out for some of the absurdity of this story.
Gladiator II (2024)
About: This high-profile sequel from Ridley Scott was an extension of the Gladiator legend. It was a big November tentpole that didn’t work for me. But it does find Pascal opposite his future Fantastic Four co-star Joseph Quinn.
