This week we get a blast from the past as I Know What You Did Last Summer lands in theaters. It’s a re-boot of the 1990s slasher that returns original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze, Jr. While Hewitt is more likely to be found on the small screen now, she was once a burgeoning player on film. This week’s binge looks back at her work in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Films appear in chronological order.

House Arrest (1996)
About:
Hewitt is a supporting player here. This is kind of a wild comedy about a couple (Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Pollack) being locked up by their kids to stave off a divorce. It’s a concept that feels very much a part of a certain era.

Trojan War (1997)
About
: Speaking of feeling like a film out of a certain era, this is your typical teen sex comedy. Will Friedle is the lead as a teen about to hook up with his crush… if only he can find protection. Hewitt plays the best friend who, no surprise, turns out to be the real girl of his dreams.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
About
: This is another teen slasher from Kevin Williamson. It didn’t quite make the same cultural impression as Scream, but it does have a good cast and is kind of a fun part of the genre. This is probably Hewitt’s biggest and best-known film.

Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)
About
: If horror isn’t your thing, you might have seen Hewitt in this. It’s another teen comedy, this one taking place at a party following graduation. This time Hewitt is the girl who the geek had a crush on, and it turns out to have a happy ending for everyone. It’s a solid teen comedy.

Heartbreakers (2001)
About
: After a sequel to her horror franchise and time spent on a pair of FOX dramas, Hewitt lands in a different kind of film opposite Sigourney Weaver. Here, they’re a mother-daughter con team. Amazingly Gene Hackman, Ray Liotta, and Anne Bancroft are also in this film. It’s just OK.
