This week the summer blockbuster F1 hits theaters. It features some great racing action. For those who want to keep that racing action going, this week’s binge is for you. Today I’m looking at five other films focused on the world of racing. Films appear in chronological order.
Days of Thunder (1990)
About: This classic features Tom Cruise as a Stock Car Driver. It turns 35 years old this summer and it still holds up. It is a reminder to me that “rubbing is racing,” and features some fun car sequences. It also has a good cast, including Robert Duvall and Nicole Kidman. It’s a lot of fun.
Driven (2001)
About: Have you ever wanted to see Sylvester Stallone as a race car driver? Then this Renny Harlin film is for you. Is it a great movie? No. But it does have some good race car action and Stallone.
Rush (2013)
About: This one comes from Ron Howard and stars Chris Hemsworth in the true story of James Hunt, following his rivalry with Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl). It has a good cast and some good racing action. It didn’t get a lot of attention at the time, but I’ve long thought it was one of the better racing films.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
About: This film comes from James Mangold and is another docudrama based on Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles. The performances from Matt Damon and Christian Bale are quite good here, as are the driving sequences. The sequence at Le Mans is the heart of the film. It’s a good racing film and a fun story to explore, despite the tragic ending.
Gran Turismo (2023)
About: This is not only one of my favorite racing films, but it was also one of my favorite films the year it was released. This is another biopic, and also tied to the video game of the same name. It was one of my biggest surprises the year it was released and a heck of a ride to watch on the biggest screen possible.
