This week, Danny Boyle’s latest film, 28 Years Later, releases in theaters. In 2002, he delivered 28 Days Later, which has continued to captivate audiences. This week’s binge looks at the six feature films he’s directed since that point. Films appear in chronological order.

Millions (2004)
About
: Perhaps an unexpected choice, this film follows a child and a found bag of money. It’s an interesting exploration with a relatively unknown cast. It showcases what Boyle does best in terms of bringing out a narrative.

Sunshine (2007)
About
: This is a science fiction kind of adventure that paired Boyle, again, with Cillian Murphy. It’s a stacked cast and an interesting idea. The film has become something of a cult classic that has its hard-core fans nearly 20 years later.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
About
: This might be my favorite of Boyle’s films. This one, which stars Dev Patel, is an interesting story that won Best Picture. Its status as a Best Picture winner isn’t what helps it stand out, rather it’s the unique storytelling style, the look and feel of the film, and the depth of emotion in the story. This is an under-rated Best Picture winner.

127 Hours (2010)
About:
This is based on a true story and stars James Franco as a hiker who gets trapped and has to make a tough decision to survive. It’s a difficult story but the way Boyle brings it together makes it really compelling.

Jobs (2015)
About:
Working off a script from Aaron Sorkin and starring Michael Fassbender, this is a biopic of the Apple CEO. I thought it moved at a good pace and was incredibly compelling. It’s a tough story to tell about an interesting figure. Boyle does a great job of bringing it to life.

Yesterday (2019)
About
: This is an odd, alternate reality musical love story. Does that sound complex? It likely requires a bit of a leap, but I appreciated the performances and the story here. It’s based on a script co-written by Richard Curtis, and it does a great job of getting you invested in these characters. This was a hidden gem.
