This week we get the live action re-make of How to Train Your Dragon. That film is one of the big releases from Dreamworks Animation over the years, spawning three animated films. This week, in honor of its release, I’m looking at five other big Dreamworks Animation projects! Films appear in chronological order.
Chicken Run (2000)
About: It’s hard to believe this film is turning 25 years old. It was a creative endeavor that paired Dreamworks with Peter Lord, Nick Park, and Ardman Studios. That’s been a fruitful pairing. This wasn’t my favorite of their releases, but it certainly helped up the studio on the map.
Shrek (2001)
About: Speaking of putting Dreamworks on the map, this is probably the singular hit that comes to mind when you come of this animated studio. Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy are gold here. This has generated a number of sequels and specials in the years since and is still going strong.
Madagascar (2005)
About: This might not be as famous as some of the other films on this list, but it’s always stood out to me. I thought the idea and execution here was fun. The voice cast—including Ben Stiller and Chris Rock—is also great. This is a somewhat overlooked gem from Dreamworks Animation.
Kung Fu Panda (2008)
About: This is another of the studio’s big franchises. Jack Black is the lead here as Po the Panda Bear, but there is a lot of incredible voice work in this franchise. It’s a fun story that has continued to connect with audiences. It spawned three sequels and counting, with the most recent released just last year!
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
About: This film turns 15 years old this year, which feels like a big mile marker. It still connects with audiences. It became a three-film series in animation and now is translating to live-action. Will it have the same success? It seems that way, but it owes a debt to these animated films.
