This week, Thunderbolts* comes out in theaters. It’s the latest superhero team up film. If it got you hyped to see more, this week’s binge is for you! Today, I’m looking at other superhero team ups you can check out. Films appear in chronological order.
X-Men (2000)
About: This is one of the first modern superhero blockbusters, taking the summer Box Office by storm 25 years ago. It’s a classic Marvel team but was part of the FOX Marvel universe. Still, it remains a classic that spawned several sequels over the years.
The Avengers (2012)
About: This is another Marvel team. In fact, most of the entries on this list are Marvel teams. But this one was the culmination of a lot of work for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve seen better Avengers films since then, but this was a revolutionary film when it was released. It still holds up as a lot of fun.
Suicide Squad (2016)
About: This is probably the closest example of what Marvel is trying to do with Thunderbolts*. Here, we got some DC figures, many of whom were villains, teamed up together to save the world. Was it flawed? Sure, but I had fun with it. James Gunn re-made it in 2021 with a new group, but I didn’t enjoy that as much.
Justice League (2017)
About: This was about the old DC Extended Universe trying to get in on the fun. This wasn’t a good movie; in fact it was something of a disaster. But we did get a better version from Zack Snyder in 2021. But the original theatrical film might have been the nail in the coffin of that version of a DC Universe.
The Defenders (2017)
About: This was the culmination of the series that Marvel licensed to Netflix. Some of this has been brought into the larger MCU, but this was an interesting group. I appreciated the special eight-episodes that brought Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and The Iron Fist together, and we might see them again on the second season of Daredevil: Born Again.
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
About: This is about two heroes who finally came together. The lone MCU release in 2024, this didn’t disappoint. I enjoyed Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and I loved the team they put together.
