This week we get Minecraft the movie. It’s the latest in a long line of films based on video game properties that dates back to the early 1990s. The last decade has seen plenty of them released. Below are five video game adaptations from the last decade that you can binge if Minecraft gets you hyped. Films appear in chronological order.
Tomb Raider (2018)
About: This wasn’t the first swing on building a franchise. The first came much earlier with Angelina Jolie in the lead role. This one features Alicia Vikander in the lead role. I liked it as an action film, and I thought it would lead to more. So far, it seems to be a one off.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019)
About: This was a big screen adaptation of the popular game. It was a different take with Ryan Reynolds voicing the classic character. I think it was meant to be funny. It didn’t work for me at all. I thought it was one of the biggest duds that came out that year, but it made a fair amount of money. It also didn’t spawn a franchise.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
About: This is an adaptation right in my wheelhouse. I had a Sega growing up and I played the Sonic games a lot. It wasn’t my favorite film, though it probably works better for a younger audience. But it’s definitely been a success. We have three theatrical releases and a streaming mini-series so far, with the fourth feature film in the works. This built a durable franchise.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
About: This is another video game franchise film that wasn’t the first bite at the apple. A previous film was released in 1995 and spawned a sequel. This felt a bit darker and was quite a bit more violent. It got released in the pandemic and became a modest streaming hit that will get a sequel coming soon.
Uncharted (2022)
About: This was a fun action film starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. It was a good pairing, and I liked the action sequences. Holland and Wahlberg make for a nice pair. This was a kick to watch in theaters. I’d be down for a sequel, but so far it doesn’t seem to be in the offing.
