This week we get the new horror film The Woman in the Yard. It comes from director Jaume Collett-Serra, who has had a varied career. This week’s binge looks at five of his previous films. Those films appear in chronological order.
Orphan (2009)
About: One of his early films, this horror film created a lot of fans. It actually led to a sequel last year. This features Isabelle Fuhrman in the lead role with a cast that includes Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga. It showcases his ability in a horror/thriller.
The Shallows (2016)
About: I love a good shark movie, and this is one of the best. Next to Jaws, this is my favorite shark movie. Part of that is a stunning lead performance from Blake Lively, and part of it is the way Collett-Serra delivers this story.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
About: This is something of a pivot from his horror films. This isn’t a horror film, but rather an action-comedy that reminds me of the Brendan Fraser version of The Mummy. I loved Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt here. This is a fun film.
Black Adam (2022)
About: This re-teams him with Johnson in a film for the now defunct DCEU. The film didn’t get great reviews, but I actually had fun with it. Did I think it was incredible? I did not. Did I think it got too much hate. It certainly did.
Carry-On (2024)
About: A Christmas film about terrorists at an airport, sign me up! This Netflix streaming film was a fun banger to end last year. It had major Die Hard vibes in the best way, making the most of Taron Egerton and a good premise.
