This week’s big new release is Last Breath, a tense film based on a true story and starring Simu Liu. He burst onto the scene thanks to Marvel a few years ago, so this week to celebrate his new film I’m looking at five other performances from Simu Liu. Films appear in chronological order.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
About
: Here, Liu played Shang-Chi. This was part of a glut of films released in the same year after COVID, with this one arguably being one of the least hyped. And yet, it was the second best of the four. It was a surprising and fun film that showed Liu is a star. I can’t wait to see him back in the MCU.

Barbie (2023)
About
: Liu was one of the Ken’s here, in fact the main Ken in conflict with Ryan Gosling. He was a delight and a gem. His acting, his singing, and the whole performance is just a ton of fun.

Arthur the King (2024)
About
: This was a fun biopic about a team of adventure racers and the dog they adopt along the way. Mark Wahlberg was the biggest human star, but Liu is part of the team and does a great job playing off Wahlberg. This was a film I really enjoyed.

Atlas (2024)
About
: Last year was a big one for Liu, who appeared in three substantial films. But they weren’t all gems. This was a streaming sci-fi action film where he appeared opposite Jennifer Lopez. The story was flat, and so was his character.

Jackpot! (2024)
About
: Another streaming film, and another one where Liu is a supporting player. This is mostly about Awkwafina and John Cena making for an odd tandem. But Liu has a fun supporting role that I actually liked quite a bit. The movie didn’t totally work for me, but Liu is a lot of fun and gets to poke a lot of fun at Cena.
