This week we get Flight Risk, the latest film directed by Mel Gibson, opening wide in theaters. The film was originally scheduled for late 2024 and pushed into January. It’s also the first of two films directed by Gibson set for a 2025 release. To mark its release, this week’s binge looks back at the previous five feature films directed by Gibson. Films appear in chronological order.
The Man Without A Face (1993)
About: Gibson directs and stars in this film. It’s a different kind of story for him at this point in his career, something of a deeper drama. He has a great back-and-forth with a young Nick Stahl, too. It’s an interesting film.
Braveheart (1995)
About: Another film where he directed and starred. This is the biopic on William Wallace that earned Best Picture honors. The film turns 30 in 2025 and is a masterful work with some great action sequences and a great story. It is Gibson’s best film as both an actor and a director.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
About: This was a somewhat daring passion project for Gibson, who directs but does not appear. This is the story of Jesus’ arrest and execution, and it’s a depiction of Scripture that doesn’t pull any punches. Gibson is working on the sequel this year. Yes, you read that correctly.
Apocalypto (2006)
About: This is probably Gibson’s most polarizing film as a director. It received mixed reviews for its unique take on the Mayan Empire. There are some interesting visuals, but the story doesn’t really work.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
About: This might be his most under-rated directing effort. It’s a World War II film telling the story of the battle of Okinawa while focusing on a medic, Desmond Doss. Andrew Garfield gives a great performance to lead the film. This is emotional and beautifully crafted. It’s a very moving tale that’s worth checking out.
