It’s been a long road for Leigh Whannell, the director of Friday’s new horror release, Wolf Man. He began his career as an actor, transitioning to writing and then directing horror films. He’s been a part of some big franchises and films. To celebrate the release of Wolf Man, today’s binge looks at some of Whannell’s previous horror films. Films appear in chronological order.
Saw (2004)
About: This horror franchise has been kicking for 20 years and counting, even inspiring a spin-off with Chris Rock. But it started as a short from Whannell in 2003 that evolved into a feature from him. He also wrote the script for Saw II and Saw III. His idea and script is what kick-started it all.
Insidious (2010)
About: After kicking around with Saw for a while, Whannell gave us a different kind of horror franchise with Insidious. He scripted the first three films, breaking into the directing ranks with Insidious III. This first one paired him with James Wan, who directed, and saw him playing a role on screen as well.
Upgrade (2018)
About: After breaking into directing on the third Insidious film, Whannell moved to writing and directing his own horror films. The first of those was Upgrade, a futuristic horror thriller led by Logan Marshall-Green. This one has an interesting idea and a sometimes-grim look but shows yet a different kind of horror film from Whannell.
The Invisible Man (2020)
About: Whannell’s third feature film as a director was his best. He served as the writer here, too, bringing a classic monster tale back to life in a creative and engaging way. Elisabeth Moss is fantastic here, too. This is a really fun film and certainly should make us more excited to see his take on Wolf Man.
