Thanksgiving week in the NFL comes to an end tonight in Denver, as the suddenly surging Broncos host the Cleveland Browns. The Broncos are in position for a playoff run, and a Monday Night Football win over the Browns would certainly help. I preview the game below, but first let’s look at what else we learned this week.
The race for the NFC North will be fierce
After 13 weeks, it’s a tight race in the NFC North. The Detroit Lions have the best record in the NFL at 11-1. But the Minnesota Vikings sit at 10-2 and the Green Bay Packers are right behind them at 9-3. There are several divisions in the NFL that don’t have a nine-game winner, and the NFC North has three of them. That’s going to make for one heck of a stretch run.
The Eagles are on a roll
Saquon Barkley scored another huge touchdown on Sunday as the Eagles got to 10 wins, beating the Baltimore Ravens on the road. The Eagles’ offense has come to life, relying on great star power to help drive the team to victory. They’re one of three 10-win teams in the NFC and appear to be in great position to earn a top see and make a run at a title.
The Bears are starting over
The Bears, after a disastrous finish on Thanksgiving, are the latest team to jettison a coach mid-season. Matt Eberflus got the team out to a 4-2 start with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. But the Bears haven’t won since. And the clock management was a huge part of the loss to the Lions on Thanksgiving, while the team lost heart-breaking games to the Packers and Vikings the two previous weeks. In his tenure, Eberflus just couldn’t get the Bears over the hump, and now a new coach will be helping them start over.
Now, on to Monday’s game.
Cleveland Browns (3-8) at Denver Broncos (7-5)
The Broncos are rolling out their Navy uniforms for a big Monday night battle with the Browns. The team sits at 7-5 and would be in the playoffs if they started today. A win on Monday night will tie them record-wise with the Baltimore Ravens as they head into their bye week. The Browns, meanwhile, are just playing for pride, and possibly revenge as Jerry Jeudy returns to Mile High.
For the Browns, Jameis Winston is a low-end QB2 for me in the matchup. With Cedric Tillman out due to a concussion, Jeudy is a WR3 for me. I also think David Njoku is a low-end TE1, while Elijah Moore may have some flex appeal as I suspect Patrick Surtain ends up on Jeudy. Nick Chubb is an RB3.
For the Broncos, Bo Nix has been hot. He’s a borderline QB1 for me, while Courtland Sutton is a solid WR2. I also like Devaughn Vele as a flex option. The backfield and the rest of the receiving options are more of a toss-up for the Broncos. If pressed, I’d probably still lean toward Javonte Williams in the backfield, but it’s hard to trust anyone with Sean Payton controlling the rotation there.
I’m taking the Broncos in this one.
