Just in time for Thanksgiving, Disney’s Moana 2 is now out in theaters. The animated film is a follow up to the original, released in 2016. It isn’t the first time Disney’s gone back to the well with a popular animated film. Below are five other Disney animated sequels. Choices appear in chronological order.
The Rescuers Down Under (1990)
About: This isn’t part of a well-known franchise, but it was one of the earliest animated sequels. The original film was released in 1977. Here, just before an epic run of animated hits, Disney offered an Australia-set sequel to viewers. The voice cast included Bob Newhart, John Candy, and Eva Gabor.
The Return of Jafar (1994)
About: This animated sequel came two years after Aladdin. It features the primary antagonist, Jafar, returning to try and get his revenge. This one, unlike the original, was released direct-to-video. It’s not the only direct-to-video sequel to Aladdin, either.
Fantasia 2000 (1999)
About: Is this truly a sequel? It’s hard to say. It’s also got 2000 in the title despite being released in 1999. But it’s a follow-up to one of the original, classic Disney animated tales, which was released in 1940. This one featured a new interpretation of the classic music.
Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
About: This is a follow up to the film Wreck-It Ralph, released in 2012. That one became a massive hit and spawned this sequel, which is a fun and engaging follow up. I’m not sure I like it as much as the original, but it has its moments. This did get a theatrical release, which was a change from years of Disney animated sequels.
Frozen 2 (2019)
About: In 2013, Frozen was a massive hit for Disney. It’s even become a massive part of the footprint of the theme parks. After years of seeing direct-to-video animated sequels, this one also got a theatrical release. It gets the band back together with a new story and new music. It was a solid follow-up, even if it didn’t reach the height of the original.
