The fifth week of the NFL season comes to a close tonight as the Saints battle the Chiefs. It should be a fun and competitive game. I’ll preview all the action in tonight’s game below. But first, it’s time to take a look at some other takeaways from the week in the NFL.
Vance Joseph is the NFL’s Assistant Coach of the Year so far
In September of 2023, Joseph’s Broncos’ defense gave up 70 points to the Dolphins. It was part of a dreadful start that led me—and others—to call for his firing. He wasn’t fired and thank God for that. Joseph got the Broncos’ defense going to end the season, and in 2024 despite a dearth of stars he’s got one of the best defenses in the NFL. Sean Payton and Bo Nix get a lot of credit for the Broncos’ 3-2 start, but the praise belongs to Joseph and his amazing defense.
And Then There Were None
The NFL’s last winless team—the Jacksonville Jaguars—got off the blocks Sunday. The Jaguars outlasted the Indianapolis Colts to move to 1-4 on the season. It’s not smooth sailing, as the team is still in a big hole and heads to London to battle the red-hot Bears in Week 6. But they got a win, which should ease off some of the pressure on the team heading into yesterday’s game.
The Vikings are Hot
The Minnesota Vikings are the NFL’s only 5-0 team. The Chiefs could join them tonight, but for now the Vikings stand alone, undefeated heading into their bye week. With T.J. Hockenson getting ready to join the party, the Vikings will be adding to their available weapons. Sam Darnold wasn’t incredible Sunday, but he was good enough to help the team get a victory as the Vikings remain one of the biggest surprises of the NFL season.
And now, on to the Monday Night game.
New Orleans Saints (2-2) at Kansas City Chiefs (4-0)
The Saints started out hot, scoring 40-plus points to move to 2-0. They’ve struggled a bit since. The Chiefs, meanwhile, have been steady but not flashy, moving to 4-0 despite missing pieces out of their offense. Still, they’ve done enough to remain unbeaten. Can they stay that was tonight?
For the Saints, Derek Carr is a QB2 for me. Among pass catchers, I like Chris Olave as a WR2 and Rashid Shaheed as a flex option. In the backfield, Alvin Kamara is the guy. It’s not a great matchup, but I like him as a low-end RB1.
For the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes is also a QB2. He just doesn’t have the high scoring numbers. In the backfield, Kareem Hunt is the best of the options, but remains a low-end RB2/Flex option. Among pass catchers, I like Travis Kelce as a TE1. He had nearly 16 points last week and should be a major factor. Xavier Worthy is a boom-or-bust WR3. I’m not slotting anyone else in this week as we see how the Chiefs adjust without Rashee Rice.
This could be a lower scoring game, but I like the Chiefs.
