Next week we get a sequel to the 2019 film Joker. This time, Joaquin Phoenix is paired with Lady Gaga, who plays Harley Quinn. Gaga, a talented singer, has plied her skills as an actress in a number of projects over the years. Below, this week’s Binge Watch looks at five previous roles. Films appear in chronological order.
Machette Kills (2013)
About: We’d seen Gaga play herself in projects, but here she plays another role in this film from Robert Rodriguez. The film was inspired by a fake trailer made for the Grindhouse double-feature. This one features Danny Trejo in the lead role. Gaga plays a small role but does a nice job.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
About: This is another very small role, as Gaga plays Bertha in this Sin City sequel. I didn’t care for the first film and liked this one even less. Still, it featured a massive cast and has a large fanbase. It showed she could sink into another character.
American Horror Story: Hotel (2015)
About: This is a TV anthology series, but it was one of her first lead roles. She played The Countess in this season of the series and is sufficiently creepy. It showed her ability and her range, albeit in a project that not everyone might have loved.
A Star is Born (2018)
About: This is probably the first big starring role that people think about as she starred opposite Bradley Cooper. This film is under-rated, and she is great. The music is great, and the story works well here, too. She should have won the Oscar.
House of Gucci (2021)
About: Gaga does a nice job in this ensemble piece from Ridley Scott. It was a high-profile project but as a film it doesn’t totally work. Still, her performance is strong and it’s a memorable part and character.
