My 2024 Nashville Film Festival coverage continues with one of my most anticipated films of the festival, Your Monster. Caroline Lindy wrote and directed the film, with Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey starring in the lead roles. The film is set to hit theaters on October 25, 2024.
Laura Franco’s life isn’t what it once was, she’s sick, her ex broke up with her whole she was ill and gave the leading role of a play to someone else. As Franco attempts to get back on her feet, she meets this terrifying yet charming monster living in her closet. As their relationship continues to grow, Franco begins to find her voice again.
There are very few people who can light up the screen the way that Melissa Barrera does. The multi-talented actress displays the perfect level of innocence, vulnerability, and eventually fierceness in her portrayal as Laura Franco. It all starts with writer/director Caroline Lindy’s script.

Lindy wrote Franco’s development within each act, building upon the layers of this character and giving a powerful payoff in the end. Lindy’s attention to detail is second to none. You rarely see someone paying attention to the little things that allow a story to fully form. Speaking of layers, Lindy hides things in plain sight with her script and direction. There were a few moments where something happened that you should’ve seen coming, but she blocks it out of your POV, which shocks you.
Barrera and Tommy Dewey’s (who plays the Monster) chemistry is electric. This was an easy love story to follow and cling to (Again, Lindy’s writing is vital). Dewey, even with this monstrous look, gives us this sweet and charming performance. The relationship was infectious yet raw, and I loved every minute of it.
Overall, Your Monster is an absolute gem of a movie that delivers a brilliant blend of romance and comedy. If you are looking for the perfect date night movie, look no further than this movie. Caroline Lindy is someone to watch for because she created pure magic.
