This week we get the long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The film comes from director Tim Burton and stars Michael Keaton. This will be the fifth film with that combination. For this week’s Binge Watch, I’m looking back on their previous four collaborations. Below the films appear in chronological order.

Beetlejuice (1988)
About:
This was their first pairing, and obviously the film that inspires this week’s release. It’s a clever and stylish film that’s become something of a cult classic. Keaton plays the titular character, but he’s kind of a supporting part here. This is more about Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin and a young Winona Ryder, who also had plenty of films with Burton!

Batman (1989)
About
: This was an iconic and important film. This brought Batman to life in a new, darker, and grittier way. Keaton might not have been an obvious choice, but as we’ve seen over the years, he was an inspired choice. He’s still my favorite actor to play the role, and this version of Batman is one of my all-time favorites.

Batman Returns (1992)
About
: A great film deserves a sequel, and this one got bigger, bolder, and weirder. Danny DeVito, Michelle Pieiffer, and Christopher Walker joined as baddies. This is a fun film, and something of a Christmas film. It has been said Batman feels a bit like a supporting player here, but I still love Keaton in the role.

Dumbo (2019)
About
: This was their last collaboration before this new movie. It came 17 years later and saw Keaton in a villain role. Making a live-action Dumbo was always going to be tough but this was under-whelming. On the latest press tour, even Keaton has expressed regret. Let’s hope their new collaboration is a return to form.
