We’re near the end of August, football is back, and school has returned. In short, summer is coming to an end. But before we bid it farewell, this week’s Binge Watch looks at my five favorite films from the Summer of 2024. Films appear in ascending order.
No. 5: A Quiet Place: Day One (June)
About: This is the third film in the franchise, but this one comes from Michael Sarnoski and is a prequel of sorts. We move to New York City as the event begins. I loved the cast and the way this film was put together. It was tense but also deeply emotional. One of my favorite surprises of June.
No. 4: Inside Out 2 (June)
About: This remains my favorite animated film of the year so far. I enjoyed the first film, but it’s never been my favorite. So, I was somewhat surprised how much I was drawn into the emotional heft of the story here. This was a beautiful film.
No. 3: Longlegs (July)
About: The month of July was great at the movies. Part of that great run was this thriller from Osgood Perkins. I enjoyed the tension and the production here. Nicholas Cage makes an impression and Maika Monroe does a nice job. It’s been a good year for horror and thriller films, and this is the best so far.
No. 2: Sing Sing (July)
About: This one is still making its way out to theaters, but I caught a limited release screening in July. I’m thrilled I did. I loved the story and the performance from Coleman Domingo. If you didn’t get a chance to see this film, do and find it.
No. 1: Deadpool & Wolverine (July)
About: The summer season is about spectacle, and no film had bigger spectacle than Deadpool & Wolverine. It was an absolute blast. I loved Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and all the fun cameos and jokes. This was my favorite film of the summer.
